Exploring Vintage Lenses with Beautiful Mums-to-Be

I recently put the call out for some models to help me experiment with a few new vintage lenses I’ve added to my collection. There’s something so timeless about the way these lenses render light and colour, and I thought maternity sessions would be the perfect way to explore their character. Plus, since vintage lenses are all manual focus and a little tricky to nail, I figured my lovely mums-to-be would be the perfect subjects—standing still long enough for me to get the shot!

I’ve done a couple of sessions now, and I’m absolutely loving the results. It’s been such a fun process, playing around with these lenses and seeing how they bring something different to each image. I’m also lucky to have some beautiful spots right here on our property, which make the perfect setting for these sessions.

One of my recent sessions was with the beautiful Lyndal. We captured her images at home, using mostly the Helios 44 on my Canon R6 Mark II. The Helios is famous for its dreamy, swirling bokeh and soft, glowing highlights, which added character to her portraits. I did, however, switch to my Canon RF 85mm f1.2 for a few shots when the flare was just a little too much for the Helios. The combination of both lenses gave me a lovely mix of vintage charm and the modern 85mm’s portrait perfection.

These sessions have been such a great creative challenge, and I’m excited to keep experimenting. I’ll be sharing more soon, but for now, here are a few of my favourites from Lyndal’s session—enjoy!
