Why I Love Photographing Families Over Time

Family Photography in Central Queensland Over Time

One of the most rewarding parts of my work as a family photographer is being able to photograph the same families over multiple stages of their lives. From engagement sessions and weddings, through to maternity, newborns, and family sessions — each shoot becomes part of a much bigger story.

Over the years, I’ve worked with families who I first met as couples, then photographed their wedding, maternity sessions, multiple newborns, and eventually extended family portraits. One family in particular has trusted me to document their engagement, wedding, maternity, four babies, and extended family sessions. Even though they’ve since moved away, we’re still trying to plan more family images — we’ll always find a way to make it happen!

In my gallery, you’ll see the Doring family, who I’ve been photographing since 2011. Originally from Clermont, their images span many years and stages of life, and they’re a true example of what it means to document a family over time. While my editing style and approach have naturally evolved over the years, the connections and relationships captured remain the same.

Photographing families over time creates a sense of continuity that you don’t get from a single session. The images build on each other, showing how families grow and change while still holding onto what matters most. It’s less about one perfect photograph and more about creating a meaningful record of real life.

From a practical point of view, repeat sessions also mean families feel more comfortable in front of the camera. There’s already trust there, which allows sessions to run smoothly and naturally, particularly when children are involved.

I regularly photograph families from Blackwater, Emerald, and across Central Queensland, many of whom I work with again and again. These long-term relationships are something I value deeply and are a big part of how I approach family photography.

If you’re looking for family photography that focuses on connection, history, and longevity, photographing your family over time creates a visual record that only becomes more valuable with the years.
