Recently, I embarked on a maternity portrait campaign with a specific goal in mind—experimenting with vintage lenses. There’s something truly special about the character these old lenses bring to an image, and I wanted to see how they could enhance my work.
Kirstin was the last mum-to-be I photographed for these sessions, and what a beautiful way to wrap up this little creative journey. Each session has been a learning experience, allowing me to get to know my vintage lenses better, push my creative boundaries, and refine my techniques.
One of the biggest challenges with these lenses is nailing the focus—modern lenses have spoiled us with their lightning-fast autofocus! But despite the extra effort required, I’ve fallen in love with the way vintage lenses render an image. The softness, the way they handle light, the stunning sun flare, and the dreamy bokeh all add a timeless quality that’s hard to replicate with digital precision.
After this experience, I’ll definitely be incorporating vintage lenses into my general portrait work more often. And if I get really brave, I might even mix them into my wedding photography!
Please enjoy a selection of images from Kirstin’s maternity session. There is a mix from both the Helios 44 and the Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 135mm, and for when I just needed some modern help, the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2. Thank you, Kirstin, for trusting me and allowing me the freedom to experiment—it has been an absolute joy!
If you’re interested in a maternity session with a touch of vintage charm, get in touch. I’d love to create something unique for you!
